Last night I was out picking strawberries and pulling weeds when I got quite a fright. Audrey and I picked this big bucket of strawberries (YUM!). I came across several scary looking spiders and it was starting to get darker, so I may have been a little on edge. I went over to pull weeds by this big rock and flower bush. As I am pulling weeds, a large bird (quail) runs out, brushing my leg. It scared me so bad. I had just told Dave the other night how the birds in our yard feel so comfortable. I have gotten within a few feet and they don't fly away. Well, I kept on pulling weeds and the quail starts squawking loudly. Then I discovered what she was doing under the bush.

Now I know why this particular quail has been staying so close. She has a big nest of eggs right under that flower bush (geraniums). I slowly walked away, took Audrey inside, and reported to Dave what happened.

As a peace offering, I went back out, filled the bird feeder with more seeds, and quickly took this picture. The quail was no longer squawking, just up on the fence talking to her partner. I spent the next hour reading about quails on the internet and trying to find out if the mother will return or just abandon the nest since I disturbed her. It sounds like if they are germinated, then she will return. If not, she will abandon.
Well, Dave reported this morning while mowing the lawn that he saw her over there several times. SOOO, we may have baby quail here in a few weeks. How exciting!
